Negativity Bias
Giving more weight to negative experiences or information than positive ones.
Examples
- A person receives 10 positive comments and 1 criticism in a performance review, but obsesses over the single negative point and ignores the praise.
- People typically overweight potential losses compared to equivalent gains, often requiring potential gains to be twice as large as potential losses to make a risk seem worthwhile.
- Speakers tend to remember the few audience members who looked bored or disapproving rather than the majority who appeared engaged and interested.
