In-Group Bias
Favoring members of one's own group over those in other groups.
Examples
- Fans perceive identical fouls as more severe when committed by the opposing team than when their own team commits them. They also view ambiguous referee calls as correct when they favor their team and incorrect when they favor opponents.
- People often interpret the same behavior differently based on cultural affiliation: what's seen as "frugal" or "traditional" in one's own culture may be labeled "cheap" or "backward" in others.
- The same policy proposal is judged differently depending on which political party proposes it, with supporters giving more benefit of the doubt to their own party's proposals.
