Hindsight Bias
The tendency to perceive past events as having been predictable.
Examples
- After a market crash, many people claim they "saw it coming" and point to signs that seemed obvious in retrospect, despite not having actually predicted or acted on these insights beforehand.
- Following a surprising election outcome, political analysts often reframe the result as predictable based on factors that seemed minor before the election but are emphasized afterward.
- People often claim they foresaw the success of major technologies like smartphones or social media, saying things like "It was obviously going to change everything," despite most people (including experts) failing to predict their massive impact.
