Slippery Slope
Claiming one small step will inevitably lead to extreme consequences. The premise that if A happens, then eventually through a series of small steps, B, C,...X, Y, Z will happen. Essentially equating A to Z. So, if we don't want Z to occur, we must not allow A to occur.
Examples
- If we allow students to use calculators on math tests, then they won't learn how to do basic arithmetic. If they can't do basic arithmetic, they won't develop proper mathematical thinking skills. Without mathematical thinking skills, they'll struggle in advanced courses, won't be admitted to good colleges, and will end up with limited career options and financial instability. Therefore, if you want a good job you should not use a calculator on math tests.
- If we allow same-sex marriage, next people will want to marry their pets!
- If you play one violent video game, you'll want to play more violent games, become desensitized to violence, and eventually become violent yourself.
